The Picture of Grace

via

The juice glass falls and shatters like raindrops on our checkerboard kitchen floor.   Sharp shards like sin and regret spray to the furthest corners of the room.

“I love you, mommy, I love you.”

My boy, his automatic response to every oops, bump, mistake.

“I love you mommy.”

Translation:  Please still love me, mommy.  I didn’t mean to drop the glass.

“It’s alright sweetheart, Mommy will clean it up.  Stay back or you will get hurt.”

He backs up, wide-eyed, watches me clean his mess with a dustpan and broom, then a damp sponge, trying to collect every tiny speck of glass.   No matter how long I wipe and sweep I keep finding tiny bits of glass.

I talk to my husband: “No matter how long I clean, there may be tiny pieces that will stick right to the kids’ bare feet.”

So I do the only thing I can think of to make sure my boys are safe:  I take off my socks and, in their place, walk barefoot all over the floor.

This is the nature of Agape love.

Agape is selfless, sacrificial, unconditional love.

For God so “agaped” the world, He gave His one and only son that whoever believes in Him will not die but have eternal life.” {John 3:16}

This is the gift of the manger, these tiding of great joy, which are to all people.

This is the very picture of grace.

The image of Unmerited favor.
