White Cottage, Red Door.

Thank you for the encouraging comments about the cottage exterior!

Now that the door is red (we are loving it!), I am trying to decide what to do with the trim around all of the windows.  The cottage itself is a true white.  When we bought it, there were black vinyl shutters (shudders!) on all the windows.  We took the shutters down but now the house seems to need more detail.  I think it would be nice to paint the exterior window trim.

I actually came across this picture below, with red trim.  It looks amazing here, but I'm not sure I {or rather our cottage}could pull it off.

I also love the combination of red, sand and white on this house:

Since our cottage is white, I could do the window trim in a sand color-sort of the reverse of this inspiration picture.  My only hesitation is that we will go through all the work to paint the window trim and it will be such a subtle color that it won't really be noticeable.  Maybe I will get a stack of large paint chips and scotch tape them {classy, I know}around the windows to see what color would look the best from the curb.

Any thoughts?  Give me your suggestions, I always love them!!

Lowe's will color match a tester paint pot for $2.94. You could get a few and do some sample painting - one color on one side, another on another side...then post pictures and we can help you decide! ;)

I agree--I think the contrast from the red and white would be lovely:)

I am so anxious for photos! When we purchased our white home it had no shutters, dove grey tin roof, grey/white porch, and lavendar doors. I desperately don't want to fall into black because our neighbours house is similar to ours, but has black shutters, except his home lacks all the beautiful landscaping and care of our home and I don't want to be his twin!!!

I have found little help, in terms of inspiration and photos, for our white house and we need help! We are tired of our purple Easter house ;)

PS -- I adore the heritage red! :)

Vanessa! I would kill for a tin roof-that's awesome! I would think that with a white house and the character of the tin roof you could do just about anything. I bet heritage red would look great with your colors! Or maybe a mustard yellow?

I like the dark red trim around the windows, but I also like black window trim. It looks like you're having fun!

I like the red trim in the picture above. Maybe trim one window and see how you like it. My friend's house is a tan color and she trimmed her windows in a barnish red and it looks great! Can't wait to see what you decide. :)

My opinion is to go with the tan, almost a khaki color trim for the windows. That way the red door is the real punch/accent that draws the eye and you could put a smashingly gorgeous wreath on it or some nautical metal something. No doubt whatever you do Erin, it will be beautiful.

Hi Erin ~ I like your second idea of a sand color for the trim. A shade just dark enough to give the trim a little pop from the street. Let the red door be the real star! Can't wait to see it!!
